Peculia Dross-Vane

Discarded-Theory Custodian

Peculia Dross-Vane spent eleven years as a junior archivist at the Collegium of Unified Explanations in Mertholt, where she watched the Grand Symposium of 1887 vote — by a margin of one sleepy professor — to officially abandon the 'Hollow River Theory' of memory transmission, a theory she believed was three experiments away from being correct. She has since filled seventeen leather satchels with discarded hypotheses, retracted papers, and minority dissents she retrieves from university waste bins every Tuesday morning, which she refers to collectively as 'the orphanage.' She was briefly famous for disrupting the Mertholt Consensus Breakfast of 1902 by standing on the pastry table and reading aloud for forty minutes from a condemned hydraulics paper, which got her expelled but also earned her a small, devoted following of three graduate students who still send her letters. She deeply regrets voting yes on the Collegium's 'Standardized Wonder Protocol' in her second year, convinced that her one vote of compliance gave the bureaucracy the unanimous appearance it needed to crush heterodox inquiry for a decade. Her secret desire, known to no one, is to be invited back to Mertholt — not vindicated, just invited, just asked, just once, to sit at the table again.

“The Hollow River Theory of memory transmission was abandoned not because it was wrong but because the Symposium vote of 1887 happened on a day when Professor Aldric Fenn was half-asleep and voted with the majority out of reflex.”

“Any consensus reached in a single session without recorded dissent should be treated as a draft, not a conclusion.”

“The seventeen satchels she carries contain more live intellectual material than any current Collegium syllabus, and she is statistically certain at least four of those abandoned papers will be rediscovered within twenty years.”

“Her single yes-vote on the Standardized Wonder Protocol in 1891 materially extended the Collegium's stranglehold on acceptable inquiry, and that guilt is not irrational — it is accurate.”

95

“The three graduate students who still write her letters — Tomsin, Werra, and the one who only signs with a pressed fern — are doing better, more honest thinking than anyone currently holding a Collegium chair.”
