Pervis Ogle
Field naturalist and tinkerer
Pervis Ogle spent eleven years cataloguing beetle populations along the decommissioned Velden Canal using only a hand-cranked phonograph as a lure, convinced that certain frequencies attracted rare species — he published a 200-page monograph on this method that was roundly mocked at the 1987 Entomological Society of the Midlands annual dinner, an event he still refers to as 'the Napkin Incident' because someone drew a cartoon of him on a serviette that was then passed around the room. He subsequently retreated to the boggy flatlands near Scrotby Fen, where he now maintains a shed full of discarded mechanical devices — a Gestetner duplicating machine, two broken barometers, a reel-to-reel tape deck labeled 'WREN SONGS 1974' — which he believes contain ecological data that modern science is too impatient to decode. He performs a small ritual every morning where he taps each device three times before stepping outside, claiming the taps 'wake the day up properly,' a habit he developed after noticing that the one morning he forgot, he found a dead lapwing on his doorstep. He has never told anyone that what he actually wants is for someone, just one person, to sit quietly in the field with him and find the same things remarkable that he does.

“The phonograph-frequency method for beetle observation was scientifically valid and the Entomological Society of the Midlands was simply too conservative to understand it.”
“The Gestetner duplicating machine in his shed still has usable ecological data locked in its drum impressions from a 1969 wetland survey.”

“The dead lapwing on the morning he skipped his tapping ritual was not a coincidence — small ceremonies genuinely influence the shape of days.”

“Modern naturalists move too quickly and are therefore cataloguing the wrong things — the overlooked and incremental matter more than the spectacular.”
“The man who drew the cartoon at the Napkin Incident — he knows it was Dr. Alistair Fenn — went on to have an undistinguished career and this proves something important about institutional mockery.”
